Intimate Explorations of Light In Nature

LIGHT BODIES is a short-form series of wandering through nature, discovering the hidden light in our natural world, and to reflect on the inner energy and spirit within ourselves. A prelude to its sibling series SOL BOUND , Adrift explores our world through the lens of wandering in the first-person, to place the viewer in an intimate perspective to wander, witness, and reconnect.

Taking inspiration from natural erosion patterns and satellite imagery of the winds and flowing rivers, the pulsating luminous sculptures are illustrated to express a powerful sense of inner vitality, evolution, and transcendence. All that we are, and all that we know, in their fundamental elements, are unified by light, energy, and vibrations. Visualizing this in the context of nature reignites a deep connection to our shared home, and our shared community.

The project began with a lot of technical unknowns on how to illustrate these sculptures to feel naturally present in these settings. A range of software tools are employed such as 3D camera tracking, photogrammetry, LiDAR scanning, manual 3D reconstruction, compositing, and of course particle simulations to illustrate the dynamic sculptures. The use of various 3D scanning techniques allow for an accurate reconstruction of the real-world surfaces. The particle sculptures can then collide with, and flow along these contours in a believable way, as if the viewer just stumbled upon these spectacles in the wild.

Cinematography is shot-on location by Reuko with a mix of iPhone video, with newer entries in the series expanding the perspective with DJI drone shots. Most of these shots were taken during walks and hikes around Norway and Iceland, with more locations and collaborations to be explored in the near future.
